I have a problem and by writing down what bothers me, I hope to maybe find a solution. Some of you might have noticed that sometimes I write only English, sometimes only German and sometimes the posts are written in both languages.
I have started the blog and written in English, because back then I still studied and all my lectures were held in English language. So it came natural to me to write in English, because I learned all the textile language in English. Since twenty months my blog is now online and many things have changed in my life since the start. I have moved, have finished my studies, started a job and some more things have changed - all to the best luckily.

Since I live and work in Hamburg, I don't use the English language daily anymore and also in work life I only need the language now and then. Nevertheless I still love the language and that was also the main point why I chose the study course, to combine my love to the English language, beautiful fabrics and the production of textiles. And I have to say, I did pretty well combining all the things leading to a career in the field of fabrics.
After finishing the exhausting part of the study course, which was the bachelor thesis and working full-tim, my life rhytm has changed again. Now I finally have something like a weekend and leisure time, which I don't necessarily need to fill with writing. Anyway I like to write, otherwise I wouldn't write this blog but I'm not forced to type down 1,5 pages every day anymore.

Of course I still think about topic that interest me, try to use my stash and live a sustainable way of living.
I have the feeling to live between two worlds tough, because on the one hand there is the great German speaking blogosphere and at the Nähbloggertreffen I could meet lots of inspiring othe bloggers. But if I look into the statistics of my blog, I can see that I have a lot of readers from the USA, Brazil and Russia.

Was tun?

Writing in German only would mean to ignore all these people who are interested in my posts and I don't want that.
Writing every post in both languages is very time consuming though and sometimes not that sensible, if I write about "German" topics or have seen an article, that was written in English.
What should I do?

On Sunday I almost arrive late at the conference, because after the exciting day before, I was very tored in the morning and hesitated to get up till the last minute. Since the event was opened a little bit later, I didn't miss a single talk.
The day started with a talk about the topic "From blog to book" by Daniela Klein, who showed from the angle of an ordinary person, how the work in the development of a book looks like. An informative speech, where one could learn a lot ( like doing touch ups on cookies) and which well executed though Daniela was very nervous.
The experienced speaker Angelika from Reisefreunde then showed us how much work and effort is behind a blog and that no one should sell at less than fair value.
The day continued with technical topics like search engine optimization and Google Analytics. Both talks were held by men, who were clearly nervous to talk in front of 120 women, but were very charming. I could learn something at both talks and even use it on my last posts.
Two editors of Couch Magazine then showed the work behind a lifestyle and fashion magazine and announced upcoming cooperations with bloggers.

The event was lots of fun and I got to know amazing women - and a man, the Backbube. Please excuse if I don't mention everyone whom I talked to, but I just couldn't memorize all the blogs that I got to know. It definitely was a wide selection of different blogs there, like fashion blogger Bine of Private Metropolitan, Sabrina the Farbkind, Heike with her lovely blog relleomein or Corana from Wohnraumformer. Then of course Anna the Novembertomate and Joanna from Mein kleines Chaos. All of them blog in German only though.

Army, Dots and Grey

This is an outfit that I wore yesterday. The skirt was made with a basic pattern, that I used a couple of times already. It is a simple pencil skirt with two darts in the back and in the front. The pattern is meant to be used with woven fabrics, but right now it only fits me in knitted fabrics lke jersey, interlock jersey or a punto di roma. This skirt ist made with left overs of sweatshirt fabric and the pleated flounce ist made from a viscose jersey. Unfortunately it isn't on stock anymore, but there are other combinations of colours. The quality of both fabrics is really good, the sweatshirt fabric has a roughened back side so it keeps warm in winter.

I combined the skirt with an army jacket, which I bought in the Humana shop in Cologne. It was a bit expensice for my shopping habits and cost 20 € but it was definitely worth the investment and I was thinking about getting something like it for quite some time. The sweater is from Oxfam, actually it's United Colors of Benetton and the shoes were bought in 2008 in Mönchengladbach at Schuh Siemes. Back then there was not a wide selection of this kind of boot and I was very happy to have found it. The quality is not so good though and one seam is already burst, but I've worn it many times already.

A comfortable outfit for a day at the desk! The knitted cardigan will probably become my favourite item this winter season, because it keeps very warm. I should have knitted with needles a size larger, because the knit is pretty dense and isolates a lot. It is just a bit heavy now. The pattern is from an old knitting magazine that I got from my grandmother. The pattern is a plain knit whereas on the sleeve cuffs, hem and collar I used a two by two rib.
I combined the cardigan with an old t-shirt from my brother, which he wanted to donate and so he gave it to me.
The pants are a second-hand find from a shop in Mönchengladbach, boots are from Guerrisol in Paris. They have zippers on the side and go up to the ankle.

Think before you buy!

Via the blog of Sadie I found this great infographic and thought that I'd like to share it with you.Much of it I already knew from my studies, where we were also discussing potential dangers from dyes and the impact that the garment industry has on the enviroment. The graphic is very informative and covers most of the important aspects.
Thanks to the Urban Times for this infographic, which was produced in collaboration with TextƧure.

That Seventies Show

In case you didn't notice already, I love the fashion of the 70s! I would have liked to live in that decade myself, but I probably wouldn't have liked living under the then existing conditions of live. I'm happy to live in this century and experience my youth - and thanks to the internet I can travel back in time anytime that I want to feel the spirit of the 70s.

These pants were made by me a while ago, the pattern is from a Burdastyle. I already bought fabric for a second version, this time in cotton velvet. The oxblood sweater is one of my souvenirs from Berlin, I got it at the Humana shop at Alexanderplatz. I wear it together with my boots. The pants are hemmed for high heels, but you can also fold the hem and wear it with any kind of shoe. I personally like the look with high heels best.

The fabric is a bargain from the outlket of Zanders in Mönchengladbach. It is a lightweight wool blend with woven check pattern. Some of the threads are shiny and that makes the fabric very versatile to combine with different coloured tops.

Berlin, du bist so wunderbar!

Some time ago I announced that I would travel to Berlin this weekend. Unfortunately I deleted the post, but you can still see the announcement of the meet-up of sewing bloggers in my sidebar. The event was organised by Catherine and Constanze. I'm sure there are many other people who helped, but these two did most of the work I think. The whole weekend was dedicated to sewing and already on Friday  a group met to explore the market at Maybachufer. Since I stayed with a friend, I only visited the last event of the weekend the blogger meet-up at the Manyfold. The Manyfold is a Creatv Space in Kreuzberg and a very inspiring location. I especially loved the wall with lots of embroidery yarn floss. I could imagine recreating that for my little sewing corner, I have plenty of yarn!

I arrived on time at 11 and on the way I already saw the first familiar face, which was Taylor Maid with a friend. How I later learned was the friend Couturette who I knew from work. Soon everybody was getting into conversation and the cosy atmosphere of the café made it easy to get to know each other. It was very nice to see the faces behind the blogs and transport some contacts from the digital world into the real world. Almost everybody wore something selfmade and when the ladies gathered for the small coat finale I was amazed by the different interpretations of everybody. A coat is still on the list of things I want to sew. Right now I'm only missing the time to sit on the sewing machine for more than half an hour. But maybe I'll consider Tillys' proposition and start to determine 15 minutes of the day to creative work.
Of course I didn't take any pictures because I left my camera at home and was too busy talking. Maybe I'll find some pictures on other blogs and then I will link to them.

My outfit of the day was a combination of a selfmade garment and thrifted. The pants are my comfortable skinny cropped corduroy pants and the sweater a bargain from the Humana shop at Alexanderplatz. The store has a great selection and if I wouldn't have travelled with light luggage I would have definitely gone crazy there. I only know a small Humana in Hamburg, the store in Altona, but there seem to be two other ones - I'll note that on my To-See-List.

Next to the blogger meet-up I also visited a concert, explained her new sewing machine to my friend and visited a great photography show at the c|o Berlin. I also did some shopping at the Schlossstraße in Steglitz where there is shopping center next to shopping center and I even had a quick look at Primark to check their quality and price level.
Here are some outfits that I wore during the weekend, all consisting of at least a handmade garment.
The jacket is a bargain from Humana as well. I bought it on my last trip to Berlin.

The top was meant to be a dress but because I didn't have enough fabric it's more of a top.
Please excuse the wrinkles, but after one day in a backpack the top looks a bit messy.

I bought the hat in an Oxfam shop and the bag brought a little bit of Hamburg to Berlin.

The sweater is one of my finds at Humana and has a lovely deep burgundy red. The skirt is made of a fabric from Zanderino.

This beautiful drawing was made by Anna from novembertomate and she kindly gave me the permission to use it on the blog
Wow!

Wow, what an amazing weekend was that? I have to say that I was a bit nervous beforehand, because I didn't know what to expect from such a kind of conference. The first event, where I wasn't only attending as the private Tine but no, I had a nametag that showed where I am working. You defintely have to watch out what you say and do then.

In the morning I made my way to Altona and on the way I already met the first bloggers who were also attending the conference in the Werkheim. Together with them I found the location and soon the conference was opened by Clara and Ricarda. Both of them have organised the event with a lot of work and bloglovin and they invited a superb selection of speakers. The keynote was delivered by the lovely sisters Toni and Thea of Sister Magazine, with whom I was already in contact via work. It's always nice to see, if you experience that the people are as nice as you imagined by the only virtual contact. The keynote was a discussion if blogs are only a virtual pettiness or a type of media with potential. The answer was sure, irrelevant are blogs not anymore, what is alreday shown by more and more cooperations of companies and bloggers. I can only support that statement, because at work I almost daily work with bloggers and try to organise cooperations and something near it.

Blogging as ajob was the next speach by Anna Frost, a fashion blogger who did the step from shooting her outfit pictures in a dirty mirror to an acknowleged fashion expert. Even when I personally read lots of fashion blogs, I couldn't quite get into the talk. Generally I don't read that many German fashion blogs, because I rarely like the styling. But I'll definitely start to look more deeply into the German scene and maybe the sprak will transmit.I'm pretty sure this is not the write wording, but I'm just realizing that I need to work on my vocabulary asap.

After a coffee break, which was used for intensive networking - and munching some cake pops by Zalando - the conference continued with a talk by Anna Neumann, the social media manager of Dawanda, which is the German equivalent to Etsy. She talked about different DIY-bloggers and supported some of my thoughts about the American and German DIY-scene. It was nice to see, that Anna talked about some bloggers that we already presented in our companies blog.

A contribution by Jeanny showed in a very entertaining manner, which importance the topic branding has on a blog and how everybody who wants to write a professional blog should think about herself as a brand. Some of her ideas I will definitely try to apply on this blog - and get myself some literature on that topic.
In the afternoon the day continued with a workshop. Frau Haselmeyer explained a small group something about Blogger and unfortunately the time was just to short to explain everything in detail. Some important tricks about links and the size of pictures were talked about and I already started to implement it on my blog.

A speech by two pr-professionals from the agency Edelman and an illustrative talk by Christian Solmecke finished the first day of the conference. But the day wasn't over yet and after beefing up on some delicious burgers by Elli kocht there were lots of interesting conversations until I went back home late in the evening. Packed with goodie bag and the Brita bag I caused some stares in the S-Bahn and came home with lots of ideas on my mind. My head was, as Anna shows on the drawing, working like crazy and it took a while until I could close the day.
An since this post is already quite long and too much text, I'll write about the events of the second day in a new post, which I will publish soon.

A list of blog posts about the conference can be found on the blog of Nic ( unfortunately all in German). And whoever would like to attend such a conference himself - there are plans for 2013. But than it is important to be quick again, because for this event the tickets were sold out after three weeks. A similar event is The Hive, an event in Berlin which is held in English.

So much to say, so little time

Finally I'm back on the internet! The connection is working and the apartment is slowly transforming into a cozy home. I'm still missing curtains in the living room, but I think I found the perfect fabric. Unfortunately it will go into sale in some weeks , so I have to wait until I can order it. Meanwhile I can work on my other decoration ideas. I'll update you on my plans soon.

On the weekend I visited a very interesting conference for German bloggers. One thing I took away from all the interesting speeches is the fact that you don't approach an interesting market for business opportunities if you post in English, so I've decided to blog bilingual and see how that works. My first German post is already written, it just needs to be translated.

The next weekend I'll be in Berlin, so please bear with me if I disappear for a couple of days again. Real life is just so much more interesting sometimes.

By the way, how do you like my new blogdesign? I changed it to be conform to my business cards!
